PLACE PROJECTS
ITP Place Projects are year-long theater collaborations rooted in a single community. We bring neighbors together across backgrounds, generations, and everyday divides to create something new together. Theater becomes the shared goal: a reason to gather, listen, imagine what's possible, and build it into being.
To reach as broad a cross-section as possible, we partner with local organizations already rooted in the community. Every part of the process is free — including catering, childcare, and transportation for events — and performances are pay-what-you-can, with proceeds reinvested in the local organizations to continue the bridge-building work.
WHO ARE OUR PARTNERS?
For every Place Project we undertake a thorough process to work with our local partners to identify community organizations who are stakeholders in the civic conversation we’re being invited to activate. We’ve partnered with over 400 organizations and institutions around the country on these hyperlocal Place Projects including:
-
Cultural institutions
-
Faith communities
-
Schools
-
Universities
-
Local service and/or government agencies
-
Nonprofits
-
Senior living communities
-
Local law enforcement
HOW WE DO IT
Below is an outline of our process, and you can read more in detail about our Place Project Process here.
Home Phase – We begin by listening—partnering with community leaders, building our local team, and getting to know the people who call this place home.
Brave Phase – We invite neighbors across difference into brave spaces to read inherited texts, create, and imagine together.
Emergent Phase – We invite everyone we've met to weave personal narratives into a shared story through an open rehearsal process, culminating in a public performance created with and for the community.
LET'S BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER
The inquiry process for a place project is simple. First, you fill out this form, which starts a conversation between you, the folks in your community you want to partner with, and the ITP team. That intake conversation works through your goals and determines a fit. Every place project is designed collaboratively around your community, your goals, and your context. If everyone agrees that an ITP Place Project will be of service to your community, we build out a timeline and add you to our projects calendar.
